Jonah is pronounced jo-naw'. Jonah was a prophet of Israel. He was a son of Amittai and prophesied during the reign of King Jeroboam. Jonah was a contemporary of the prophets Amos and Hosea. Jonah was ordered by God to go to Nineveh and prophesy against it. Jonah rebels and tries to flee to Tarshish in a ship. On the way, the ship faces a great storm, and the sailors throw Jonah overboard in an effort to appease God. A huge fish sent by God swallows Jonah, and he spends three days and nights inside its belly praying to God, and repenting his disobedience. The fish safely vomits out Jonah on dry land, and he goes to Nineveh and proclaims the judgment of God. The king and the people of Nineveh repent and turn towards God. This story is told in the Book of Jonah. In the New Testament, Jesus is compared to Jonah and the repentant people of Nineveh with the unrepentant people of Jesus' time.
