Ezra, the priest and scribe was the son of Seraiah and a descendant of Phinehas, the son of Aaron. Ezra led a group of Israelites living in exile in Babylon, back to their homeland of Jerusalem. He co-worked with Nehemiah in reforming the social and religious lives of the returned exiles.

Ezra authored the books of Chronicles, Ezra and Nehemiah. Some Bible scholars also attribute the authorship of the books of Esther, Ezekiel, Daniel, and the twelve prophets to Ezra.
