It was built on the two mountains, Zion and Moriah. Jerusalem is first mentioned in the Bible, as being ruled by Adonizedek, an ally of Abraham. After the Exodus, Joshua allocated Jerusalem to the tribe of Benjamin, but it continued to be under the independent control of the Jebusites until it was conquered by David and made into the capital of the united Kingdom of Israel. Solomon built the Holy Temple on Mount Moriah at Jerusalem. After his death, the kingdom divided, and Jerusalem continued as the capital of the kingdom of Judah. Jerusalem was invaded many times by the Egyptians, the Assyrians, and by the kings of Israel, and was finally destroyed by Nebuchadnezzar, the king of Babylon. He also carried away its inhabitants as slaves. The Jews returned from Babylonian captivity during the reign of Cyrus, and rebuilt Jerusalem and the temple, under the guidance of Ezra and Nehemiah.
